Boutique Hotels
For those looking for something with a little character, London has plenty to offer with boutique hotels all across town, and even in the suburbs.
Many of central London's celebrated designer hotels are destinations in themselves, among them luxury hotels designed by Philippe Starck (St Martin's Lane and the Sanderson) and Anouska Hempel (the ground-breakingly minimalist Blakes). Such design hotels are popular with the fashion and Wallpaper crowd, boosting the capital's cool credentials.
Soho hotels offer secluded luxury amid bustling streets boasting some of the hippest bars (gay and straight) and latest restaurants. Quirky Hazlitt's offers creaky Georgian styling with carved four poster beds and real fireplaces in the former home of the eponymous essayist; for something completely contemporary, there's designer Soho Hotel.
Other weird and wonderful specimens among London boutique hotels include the Gore (antique splendour behind the Albert Hall); 41, just behind Buckingham Palace (monochrome, marble, and once bedroom completely open to the sky); the Rookery (crepuscular nooks and crannies, and the odd rock star, in Clerkenwell); the Portobello Hotel draped in colonial splendour.
Design lovers may appreciate the convenience of Andaz at Liverpool Street Station, close to Hoxton, Spitalfields and Brick Lane, or the Egerton House Hotel near London's western design hub Brompton Road, where each of the 29 rooms is styled in a unique and distinctive manner.
For something off-beat, don't be afraid to look away from the central London hotels. Only slightly further out, and still on direct transport routes into town, you can find a Mexican-themed Church Street Hotel in busy Camberwell; the 17th century Windmill (a smart pub and restaurant, not an actual windmill sadly) on Clapham Common; another outpost of the internationally hip Soho House brand, High Road House, designed by Ilse Crawford, amid the chichi boutiques of leafy Chiswick; and the Bingham Georgian townhouse hotel beside the Thames in Richmond.
