Bloomsbury, London
Bloomsbury is Georgian town planning at its gentile best - elegant terraces set around leafy squares. The area is dominated by one of London's chief tourist attractions, the British Museum, but smaller places of intrigue include the Dickens Museum, Cartoon Museum and the Foundling Museum, and up at Euston Road the Wellcome Collection. It is also home to some of London's prestigious universities and colleges (SOAS, UCL, RADA) and hospitals (Great Ormond Street, and University College Hospital).
There are many advantages to choosing a Bloomsbury hotel over those in more popular areas: it is right by Euston, St Pancras and Kings Cross stations. It's quieter than the West End, but you can walk to the City or Oxford Street, and Russell Square is just two stops on the Piccadilly line from Covent Garden. And of course it's much, much cheaper.
Just off Tottenham Court Road there's the value-for-money Bloomsbury Hotel, Conran's MyHotel Bloomsbury, and two Radisson ventures, Bloomsbury Street Hotel (recent recipient of a tasteful modern makeover) and the Kenilworth, right next door to the British Museum.
A series of established hotels lead up Southampton Row and Bedford Way, six under the auspices of the Imperial group and offering attractive rates. The Royal National Hotel is the biggest of this Bloomsbury Set; others are the Imperial, President, Bedford, Tavistock and County, the latter offering some of the cheapest rooms in the area although guests have to share a bathroom.
Bloomsbury has also been a beneficiary of London's ongoing gentrification. The most noticeable transformation has been the Brunswick Centre, formerly an unloved piece of 1960s concrete modernism, now a glistening shopping centre and apartment complex with high street names, outdoor eating and an arts cinema.
Children will enjoy the charming Coram's Fields, while round the corner is Lamb's Conduit Street, home to stylish independent shops and authentic Victorian pub The Lamb. This eastern part of Bloomsbury is well served by the London Bloomsbury Holiday Inn.
