Kensington, London

Kensington is an area of grand buildings, with wider streets and more room to breathe than in the city centre.

Being home to London's major museums (Science Museum, Natural History Museum, V&A), close to its biggest expanse of parkland (Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens), the site of its famous concert venue (the Royal Albert Hall), next to its major exhibition centre (Earl's Court), home to many embassies and cultural centres, and close to its most expensive shops (Knightsbridge), Kensington is a popular place to stay.

London's francophone population is concentrated in the South Kensington area, visible by the number of French cafes and the active Instut Français. It's also home to premium nightclubs such as Boujis where you can find young royals at play.

There's plenty to please among the top end South Kensington hotels - the theatricality of Gore, the über minimalism of Blakes, the grandeur of Bentley or the urban chic of Number Sixteen. Contemporary style can be found at the newly-refurbished Kensington Hotel, which houses150 rooms and a sophisticated cocktail bar.

Millennium Copthorne have several Kensington hotels in their portfolio: Baileys and the Gloucester (both near the Natural History Museum), Copthorne Tara (near the Royal Albert Hall), and two hotels near Kensington: Millennium Knightsbridge (handy for Harrod's) and the Copthorne at Chelsea Football Club.

The area around High Street Kensington is young and vibrant, with high street fashions, and students from the nearby Royal College of Art. Hotels in this part of Kensington include The Milestone, Baglioni, Seraphine, and luxury business hotel the Royal Garden.

There are more budget options available near Kensington at Earls Court, considerably more down-at-heel but livelier and with excellent transport connections, and deluxe options close to Knightsbridge, one of London's wealthiest neighbourhoods.
